What is an Arm Lift?

Arm lift or brachioplasty is a procedure during which excess arm skin and fat are removed from the upper arms. After weight loss surgery or advancing age, there may be a large amount of hanging skin from the upper arms resulting in a "bat-wing" appearance. This can be treated with a brachioplasty or arm lift that will remove the excess arm skin and fat from this region. After brachioplasty the arms will appear more trim, firm and smooth.

Who is a candidate for an Arm Lift?

The majority of arm lift patients are massive weight loss patients that have stabilized their weight loss. Older women are good candidates, as well.

The Arm Lift Procedure

It is not uncommon for women to have excess fat in the upper arm that is difficult to get rid of even with exercise. Furthermore, as one ages, the upper arm skin can become loose and flabby. The upper arm can be treated with just liposuction if the primary problem is excess fat, or, with a combination of liposuction and removal of excess arm skin if the skin is loose. The incision for removal and tightening of the skin can be hidden in the armpit if there is only a moderate amount of excess arm skin. If there is a significant amount of excess arm skin to remove, the incision is placed along the inner aspect of the arm to minimize the visibility. The scar will fade to some extent over 6 to 12 months.
