What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck—also called abdominoplasty—is a body contouring procedure that reshapes the abdominal area. The goal of the surgery is to restore the tissues to a more youthful appearance. This is accomplished by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the abdominal muscles when needed. Dr. Tehrani often uses a Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty technique to improve the appearance of the entire abdominal area, from just below the chest to the top of the thighs.

During a tummy tuck, Dr. Tehrani makes an incision across the bikini line. Excess skin is removed, and liposuction is used to remove extra fat. Muscles are tightened as needed. The navel (belly button) is repositioned. Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty (Dr. Tehrani’s preference) preserves the blood supply to the abdomen, lowering the risk of complications. In patients with a great deal of excess skin, such as some post-bariatric surgery patients, Dr. Tehrani may perform an extended tummy tuck. This features a larger incision (sometimes 360 degrees) to tighten skin on the back and sides in addition to the abdominal area.

What Is the Difference Between a Tummy Tuck and a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A full tummy tuck using Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty transforms the entire abdominal area but, for patients with excess fat and skin in the lower abdominal area only, a mini tummy tuck may be sufficient. This procedure uses a small incision and does not reposition the belly button. It only removes fat and skin from below the belly button. It is less invasive than a full tummy tuck and has a shorter recovery time.

What is Recovery Like After Liposuction?

Dr. Tehrani utilizes a variety of techniques and methods for achieving stunning liposuction results with each patient. Recovery times vary substantially depending on the patient and the technique used. Most people take at least a week off from work. Less invasive surgeries like the mini tummy tuck generally require a shorter downtime than more invasive options, like the extended tummy tuck. We’ll provide you with extensive instructions and tips for a successful recovery.
