What is the Selphyl System?

The Selphyl System is an anti-aging procedure which allows physicians to prepare an autologous Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) using a small amount of the patient’s blood, which is then used as a dermal filler. The treatment is injected in the patient’s face and it releases proteins which trigger cell growth and cell migration. This enables the creation of a stronger collagen structure and, thus, significantly improves the patient’s physical appearance.

Because it uses the patient’s blood, the Selphyl System is also known as the Vampire Filler or Vampire Facelift. The procedure was first introduced on the market in 2009 and, since then, it has been featured in multiple print, radio, television, and online broadcasts, including “The Rachel Ray Show” and “The Doctors.”

Who is a candidate for the Selphyl System?

The Selphyl System is a treatment appropriate for patients of all ethnicities who are interested in diminishing the signs of aging, improving the appearance of wrinkles around the nose and the mouth, fading deep scars from acne, and erasing similar facial imperfections. Doctors feel that patients who are dealing with blood clothing and who are taking blood thinning medications should not use the Selphyl treatment.

The Selphyl Treatment

The Selphyl Treatment takes place in a physician’s office and requires no general anesthesia. The treatment is typically completed in about thirty minutes or less, and it is rarely uncomfortable.

When a patient arrives at the office, the specialist draws out a small amount of blood into a vacuum tube containing a cell separator gel. That gel enables the division of blood components – red and white cells go below the gel, and the platelets and plasma stay within it. They are, then, transferred into a second vacuum cube containing a calcium chloride solution. After about 10 minutes, the Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix forms and it is ready to be injected into the treatment area.

The recovery is short and relatively easy, since there are no side effects and the patient does not have to take any pain medications.

The results of the Selphyl treatment are visible in two to three weeks. As new cells form, the treated area becomes smoother and signs of aging are greatly diminished.
