What is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein that naturally occurs in the body and provides support to various parts of the human body: the skin, the joints, the bones and the ligaments. Injectable collagen, patented by the Inamed Corporation under the trade names Cosmoderm® and Cosmoplast®, is derived from recombinant human collagen. Injectable collagen received approval from the FDA in 1981. It is produced in various thicknesses to meet individual patient needs as it can be injected just below the skin’s surface to fill wrinkles, lines and scars on the face and sometimes the neck, back and chest.
Who is a candidate for Collagen?
Most candidates for collagen treatment are ages 35 to 60 years old and are interested in reducing or reducing the early signs of aging. Collagen treatment can be used to touch-up areas around the forehead and mouth where wrinkles have begun to reappear after previous procedures. Lip collagen injections help patients achieve fuller, more voluptuous lips. The ideal candidates have skin that is still relatively flexible, but older patients may also benefit from collagen injections.
The Collagen Treatment
Collagen treatment starts with an allergy test in which a small amount of collagen is injected in your skin. If there are no adverse reactions after several days, such as swelling, redness, itching or anything else unusual, Dr. Tehrani will proceed with mapping the strategic points on your face as guides to the appropriate future collagen injections sites.
An antibacterial agent is applied on the injection sites to clean the area, and that is followed by an anesthetic (sometimes the filler itself has an anesthetic in the mixture). The actual collagen injections will take just few seconds per site, and the whole treatment ends in a few minutes. The whole area is then washed away and an ice pack is applied to reduce any minor and temporary discomfort.
Benefits of Collagen
Collagen fillers will result in a natural look, improving wrinkles, lines and scars. A collagen lip injection will produce a fuller appearance. In addition to this, collagen can be used to plump up creased and sunken areas, add fullness to your cheeks or other facial areas, reduce frown and worry lines, decrease crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes, define the lip border and add volume to our lips…
