A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a procedure that’s designed to improve the most visible signs of aging. For a lot of women (and, increasingly, men) the desire to have a youthful look for a big occasion like a class reunion is a major reason facelifts are so popular. By removing excess skin and fat, tightening any underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your face and neck, Dr. Tehrani can turn back the clock on your facial appearance.
The surgery corrects a sagging neckline, the appearance of jowls, the deposit of fat along the jawline and neck, and a deepening of the lines between the nose and corners of the mouth, or nasolabial folds.
The goal of a facelift is a youthful facial appearance. Although aging does not stop, a facelift can push back the baseline, and in most cases ten years, to give you the self-confidence that comes with a younger look. The results will not wear off, but when further aging occurs, you can choose to have a secondary facelift in the future. Good candidates for a facelift include women and men whose faces and necks are beginning to sag — typically between the ages of 45 and 70, which is prime time for all of those milestone class reunions!
The facelift is an outpatient procedure that’s usually performed under general anesthesia, and takes between 2 and 3 hours. Some procedures use local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.
Following the facelift, about 1 or 2 hours is spent in the recovery room before discharge to an aftercare facility or home for private nurse care. Over the course of around 10 days, bandages and stitches will be removed until any bruising or swelling heals. Makeup can be applied typically after 1 week, while work and social activities can be resumed after 2 weeks, but no strenuous exercise for 2 to 3 weeks!
Liposuction can remove the fat cells from the treated area on your body, but it’s not a substitute for weight control or exercise. You can still put on weight after the liposuction procedure, although the fat will be distributed more uniformly throughout your body. It doesn’t accumulate disproportionately in the same areas.
Whether you’re a man or woman, you can benefit from liposuction. The most frequently treated areas in women are the chin, abdomen, thighs, hips, knees, arms, back, buttocks, calves, and ankles. For men, the typical sites for liposuction are the neck, chin, abdomen, “love handles,” and chest/male breasts (gynecomastia).
Likely candidates for liposuction include those who have a double chin or localized pockets of fat on their bodies that have not budged despite exercise and weight loss efforts. A person that is of relatively normal weight with one or more areas of fat deposits and with good skin elasticity is also considered a good candidate. The liposuction procedure is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation, depending on the technique used and the procedure’s extent.
Dr. Tehrani makes small incisions in inconspicuous locations so that a hollow tube called a cannula can be inserted into the skin. The popular tumescent liposuction technique, which uses fluid to reduce bleeding and pain, takes the cannula and attaches it to a clear plastic tube which is connected to a vacuum device. The excess fat is then removed in layers until a pleasing improvement is made.
There are different types of liposuction that use different techniques to achieve results:
Patients are fitted with an elastic garment to wear post-surgery to wear for 2 to 3 weeks. You’re allowed to go home a couple of hours after the procedure in the care of a family member or friend, or have a private nurse visit you if requested.
Bruising will resolve within a week or so, while swelling may take a couple of weeks to go down completely. Once your body has completely healed, you will be thrilled with your new trimmer and slimmer body!

- Laser-Assisted Liposuction (Laser-Assisted Lipoplasty (LAL) or SmartLipo) is an innovative procedure for both removing excess fat and firming loose skin.
- Water-Assisted Liposuction (Body-Jet) is a technique that also uses a cannula and suctions out the unwanted fat, but in this case, the removed fat cells are harvested to be transferred or grafted to another part of the body.
