Breast Implant Revision

Breast implant revision is an increasingly common plastic surgery procedure in the New York metropolitan area, including Long Island.

A Breast implant revision at Aristocrat Plastic Surgery is a specialized procedure designed to address issues or changes in a patient's existing breast implants. Top New York board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Kevin Tehrani, will skillfully replace, adjust, or revise breast implants to achieve desired outcomes, whether it's correcting complications, enhancing aesthetics, or accommodating lifestyle changes. With precision and care, our plastic surgery team can tailor solutions to meet each individual's unique needs, ensuring beautiful and satisfying results.

There are many reasons why women undergo breast implant revision – either due to a physical change in appearance or a desire for something different. Primarily, women are seeking a fuller and shapelier appearance compared to their existing implants or a correction of a complication.

Is Breast Implant Revision Right For You?

A key step in the breast implant revision process is a consultation with Dr. Kevin Tehrani, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Aristocrat Plastic Surgery & MedAesthetics. Dr. Tehrani has performed hundreds of successful breast implant revision procedures, as well as breast augmentations, and has vast experience in this area of plastic surgery.

During your consultation, he will evaluate your existing implants and recommend alternatives to help meet your goals. These could include implant removal, replacement, or even an alternative procedure such as a breast lift. During your consultation, Dr. Tehrani will also discuss with you the process or technique he will use for your breast implant revision procedure.

You will have a discussion to see if you are a candidate for the innovative internal bra support using Strattice. Dr. Tehrani is also one of only a few surgeons in the country who performs the TUBA procedure, replacing implants through a belly button incision.

Who Is A Candidate for Breast Implant Revision?

The ideal candidate for a Breast Implant Revision is an individual who has previously undergone breast augmentation surgery and now seeks to make adjustments or corrections to their implants. They should have realistic expectations and specific goals for the revision, such as changing implant size, and

shape, or addressing complications like capsular contracture or implant rupture. It is essential that the candidate is in good overall health, with no active infections or medical conditions that may impede the surgical process or healing. A commitment to following post-operative instructions and attending follow-up appointments is also crucial to achieve the best results and ensure a safe and successful revision procedure.

Potential candidates include women who wish to obtain new implants for one of the following reasons:

  • A desire for a different size, shape, or feel of their breasts.
  • Dissatisfaction with the results of a prior procedure.
  • Breast deflation.
  • Leakage or rupture.
  • Breast asymmetry.
  • Switch between silicone to saline implants or vice versa.
  • Breasts have descended too low.
  • Capsular Contracture (shrinking of breasts to the point where they become hard).
  • Infection, wrinkling, shifting, or loss of cleavage.
  • An MRI or ultrasound indicating a shift or change in implants.
  • Trauma, accident, complications, or other factors.

Other medical, physiological, or personal reasons.

What Is The Breast Implant Revision Procedure

View Galleries

The procedure is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Techniques depend on your particular case and what you wish to correct. In most cases, implants are replaced, so the technique used is similar to your original breast augmentation.

Whenever possible, Dr. Tehrani will use your existing incisions, but some cases may require new incisions. A breast implant revision procedure, also known as breast implant revision surgery or breast implant revisionary surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to address issues or complications associated with breast implants that have previously been placed.

This surgery can be performed for various reasons, including correcting implant-related problems, achieving a different aesthetic outcome, or addressing changes in the breast tissue or implant position over time. Here’s a detailed description of a typical breast implant revision procedure:

    1. Consultation: The process begins with a consultation between the patient and Dr. Tehrani. During this consultation, he will discuss the patient's concerns, goals, and medical history. He will also perform a physical examination and assess the condition of the existing breast implants.

    2. Preoperative Planning: Based on the consultation, Dr. Tehrani will develop a customized surgical plan that addresses the patient's specific needs and objectives. The plan will include details such as implant size, implant type (saline or silicone), incision location, and the need for additional procedures (e.g., breast lift).

    3. Anesthesia: On the day of surgery, the patient will be administered anesthesia to ensure their comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Typically, this is done using either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.

    4. Incision and Implant Removal: Dr. Tehrani will make an incision, typically in the same location as the original breast augmentation incision, such as the inframammary fold (crease under the breast), periareolar (around the areola), or transaxillary (in the armpit). The choice of incision depends on the patient's anatomy and Dr. Tehrani’s recommendation. Dr. Tehrani will carefully remove the existing breast implants. In some cases, the implants may be intact and simply replaced, while in others, they may need to be removed due to complications or issues.

    5. Evaluation and Revision: Once the implants are removed, Dr. Tehrani will assess the condition of the breast pocket and surrounding tissue. Any necessary corrections or revisions will be made, such as repairing stretched or damaged breast tissue, adjusting the implant pocket, or repositioning the implants for improved symmetry and appearance.

    6. Implant Replacement: If the patient chooses to have new breast implants inserted, Dr. Tehrani will carefully place them in the revised breast pockets. The choice of implant size and type will be in line with the patient's preferences and surgical plan.

    7. Additional Procedures (if needed): Depending on the patient's goals and the condition of the breast tissue, Dr. Tehrani may perform additional procedures during the revision surgery. This could include a breast lift (mastopexy) to address sagging, nipple repositioning, or removal of excess skin for a more youthful appearance.

    8. Closure: After all adjustments and implant placements are complete, Dr. Tehrani will close the incisions with sutures, and the appropriate dressings or bandages will be applied. Surgical drains may be inserted to prevent fluid buildup, and a supportive surgical bra may be provided.

    9. Recovery: The patient will be closely monitored in the recovery area before being discharged. Detailed postoperative instructions, including information on pain management, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments, will be provided.

    10. Follow-Up Care: Patients will need to attend follow-up appointments with Dr. Tehrani to monitor the healing process, remove any surgical drains, and ensure that the results are progressing as expected.

Breast implant revision surgery is a highly personalized procedure designed to address individual concerns and achieve the desired breast appearance.

    Breast Implant Revision Recovery

Most breast implant revision surgeries require the same recovery period as after breast augmentation. You will experience some swelling, bruising, tightness, and soreness. We will provide you with a surgical bra that you must wear for a few weeks, as well as pain medication to make you more comfortable as you heal. We will also provide you with full post-op instructions for washing your stitches and when to come back to our office for follow-up appointments.

Recovery from a breast implant revision procedure is a crucial phase in the overall treatment process. It involves healing, managing discomfort, and allowing your body to adapt to the changes made during the surgery. Here is a detailed description of what to expect during the recovery period:

    Immediate Postoperative Period:

    1. Recovery Room: After the breast implant revision surgery, you will be closely monitored in the recovery room until you wake up from anesthesia. Our medical team will check your vital signs, pain levels, and overall well-being.

    2. Bandages and Dressings: You will have bandages and dressings over the incision sites and a surgical bra or compression garment. These garments provide support, minimize swelling, and help with proper healing.

    3. Surgical Drains: In some cases, Dr. Tehrani may place surgical drains to remove excess fluid and prevent fluid buildup around the implant or incisions. These drains will typically be removed in a follow-up appointment when drainage decreases significantly.

The First Few Days (0-3 Days):

    1. Pain Management: You will likely experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising during the initial days after surgery. Dr. Tehrani will prescribe pain medication to manage pain effectively. It's essential to take medications as prescribed to stay ahead of the pain.

    2. Rest and Limited Activity: Rest is crucial during this phase. Avoid strenuous activities, lifting heavy objects, or raising your arms above shoulder level. Follow Dr. Tehrani’s instructions regarding movement restrictions.

    3. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising are common after breast revision surgery. Applying cold compresses (ice packs) as directed by Dr. Tehrani can help reduce these symptoms.

    2. Surgical Bra: Continue to wear the surgical bra or compression garment as instructed by Dr. Tehrani. It provides support to your healing breasts and helps reduce swelling.

      First Few Weeks (2-4 Weeks):

      1. Resuming Normal Activities: Gradually, you can start to resume light activities. However, avoid any high-impact exercises or activities that could strain your chest muscles or incisions until cleared by Dr. Tehrani.

      2. Scar Care: Dr. Tehrani may recommend scar care products or techniques to help minimize scarring. It's essential to follow these instructions diligently

      3. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with Dr. Tehrani. He will assess your progress, remove any remaining sutures or drains, and provide guidance on your recovery.

Long-Term Recovery (4-6 Weeks and Beyond):

        2. Swelling Resolution: Swelling may persist for several weeks, but should gradually subside. It may take several months to see the final results of your breast implant revision.

        3. Scar Maturation: Scars will continue to evolve and mature over the course of a year or more. Continue to follow Dr. Tehrani’s scar care recommendations.

        4. Final Results: The final results of your breast implant revision procedure may not be fully apparent until all swelling has resolved, and the healing process is complete.

It's essential to communicate openly with the medical team at Aristocrat throughout the recovery process. If you experience any unusual symptoms, complications, or concerns, do not hesitate to contact our office for guidance and assistance. Following Dr. Tehrani’s postoperative instructions diligently is crucial to ensure a safe and successful recovery from a breast implant revision procedure.

              Types of Breast Implants

Breast implants come in many shapes and sizes, with differing inner and outer materials. Together, you and Dr. Tehrani will select the option that is best suited for you and most likely to achieve the results you desire.

All breast implants have an outer pliable envelope (or shell). The contents of the envelope are used to achieve fullness and create the most natural breast-like feeling possible. The implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. Saline is salt water, much like the fluid that makes up 70% of the human body. If the implant should leak and the saline is released, it can be safely absorbed by your body. Silicone gel-filled implants are also FDA-approved and very safe.

The implant shapes are generally round, oval, or contoured. The surface of the implants can be smooth to the touch or textured. Dr. Tehrani will also discuss these options with you.

With the FDA approval of Allergan’s INAMED® Silicone-Filled Breast Implants for breast augmentation and reconstruction surgery, there are more choices than ever. Aristocrat Plastic Surgery has undergone a rigorous certification process to gain access to the wide range of breast implant options in the INAMED® Matrix of breast implants. We also offer Sientra’s silicone fifth-generation breast implants in both round and teardrop shapes. These additional options ensure that you will get the best possible result from your breast augmentation surgery.
