Over half of americans approve of cosmetic surgery

In 2010, 48% of the population said they approved of plastic surgery. In 2011, that figure rose to 51%, according to a survey from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Interestingly, 20% of respondents said they changed their opinion of plastic surgery to more favorable in the last 5 years.

NYC Cosmetic SurgeryWomen are understandably more positive towards cosmetic surgery, with 53 percent of them approving of it, compared to 49% of men. Almost 67% of the respondents answered that they would’t be embarrassed if their friends found out about their aesthetic surgery.

“Taking care of yourself and paying attention to physical appearance is increasingly important to everyone. As both traditional surgical procedures have been improved and refined, and new nonsurgical options have become available, aesthetic plastic surgeons have more to offer to our patients.” said Felmont F. Eaves III, MD, President of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is becoming more popular among all demographics, from people motivated to look better for job interviews to high income patients who want to achieve better celebrity looks. According to 2010 ASAPS statistics, almost 9.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States last year.
