Q&A: How to determine if breast reduction is required?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure in which fat, glandular tissue and skin is removed from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer in addition to reshaping them.

Sometime the natural size of the breasts can cause some problems for women, such as back and neck pain, changes in posture, skin rushes on the undersurface of the breast and more.

But, determining if a patient is required to go undergo a breast reduction, is not an easy process. As Dr. Kevin Tehrani says in his answer to a RealSelf user, there are multiple parameters that need to be considered when deciding if patient’s breasts are too large and ready for a breast reduction.

How to determine if breasts are too large and breast reduction is required?

“I’m 24, 5’6″, 160 lbs with size 34F breasts. I have a narrow back and waist compared to my breasts and hips. I suffer from back pain and rashes under my breasts, and have tried to combat the issue by losing 36 pounds and maintaining this weight loss over the course of the last 3 years. If I see a doctor, how will he/she determine if my breasts are too large for my body? Any other information I should collect before a consultation? Is my weight a concern for insurance purposes? Thank you.” a RealSelf user asked.

“Thank you for your question. Based on your description, you seem to be a good candidate for breast reduction. You need to be seen in person which case multiple parameters will be measured and pictures will be taken. Once medical necessity is established, a letter will be written to insurance company.  In my offices, my coordinator will then work with you and your insurance company to obtain coverage for your surgical procedure.” Dr. Tehrani answered.
